A Family Session Rooted in Home
Some sessions stay with you not because of perfect light or perfectly styled outfits, but because of the heart behind them. Sue and Carlos wanted exactly that something real, unfiltered, and true to their everyday life in Valley Springs.
We started the afternoon right where their story lives: at home. Their land, their animals, their routines, all the small moments that make their life theirs. Older galleries sometimes don’t match my current style exactly, but this one still stands out because it’s so honest. It feels lived in. It feels like family.
Emus, Goats, Chickens & Chaos. The Best Kind!
When they told me they wanted to include their animals, I knew we were in for an unforgettable session.
Emus wandering around, goats pushing in for attention, chickens trailing behind the kids. It created the perfect mix of movement and laughter.
Instead of posing, we let the chaos lead. The kids explored their space the way they do every day, and I followed along with my camera, capturing the little in-between moments you can’t plan:
Tiny hands reaching for chicken feed.
Giggles running through the yard.
The gentle comfort of home wrapped around them.
These are the moments that become our most valued memories.
Front-Yard Play & Unscripted Magic
After spending time with the animals, we moved to their front yard where play naturally took over.
No prompts needed just sunshine, grass under their feet, and the kind of joy that only comes from being completely comfortable in your own space.
This is what I love most about at- home sessions. They allow families to relax into themselves, to forget about the camera, and to simply be. And when that happens, everything looks and feels like them not a curated version, but the real thing.
Ending at Lake Hogan for Sunset
Before the light faded, we headed to Lake Hogan to close the session.
The golden hour glow softened everything into a warm, hazy finish across the water. The kids skipped along the shore, the parents held each other quietly, and the pace slowed into something tender and grounding.
It was the perfect contrast to the lively energy earlier in the day a gentle exhale at the water’s edge on a warm summer evening.
Why I Love This Session
Even though my editing style has evolved since we shot this, the heart of this gallery still shines. It’s a reminder that the best sessions aren’t the ones where everything looks polished they’re the ones where families show up as themselves.
Sue and Carlos made this session their own, and that’s why it remains one of my favorites.
